“Copy that.” The voice on the other end was crisp.

Silas stood up and walked to the monitoring room’s floor-to-ceiling window. Lines of hexadecimal data and timestamps scrolled across the screen. He didn’t need tools to parse this—the skill he’d developed in the Air Force was finding the signal in all the noise.

He found a faint wrinkle.

Silas didn’t act hastily. He closed all analysis windows, leaned back, crossed his arms, closed his eyes, and thought for a while.

His first instinct was to report it to Belgrade. But the thought lingered in his mind only a few seconds before being replaced by another.

Milan wouldn’t give him the credit he deserved.

He opened his eyes and created a new tracking task, codename: “Net Strike.”

In the task description, he wrote:

He was experiencing the most peaceful few days in nearly five years.

His daughter’s condition seemed to have entered a brief stable period. Every morning, the first thing Lu Yuan did was check his daughter’s monitoring report on the tablet. EEG data was automatically collected, uploaded, and analyzed through the night. At 6 AM sharp, a diagnostic recommendation was generated. The first day’s report showed a 12% reduction in abnormal discharge frequency. The second day: 21%. The third day’s report had an additional line at the bottom, in green font from the AI system:

Lu Yuan stared at that green line and felt a stone that had been pressing on his chest for years lift by one centimeter. Not much. Just one centimeter. But it was enough for him to breathe.

He decided to take his daughter to the park.

It was Saturday. Shenzhen in June was an oven, but the OCT Ecological Park was thick with trees, a breeze blowing across the lake, the temperature at least five degrees cooler than the city center. Lu Yuan put a sun hat on his daughter, packed water and snacks, and took three stops on the bus to the park entrance.

He bought two tickets—fifteen credits each, his daughter was free. The ticket seller glanced at him, then at the girl, and said with a smile, “Your kid’s got good color.” Lu Yuan smiled back. “She’s been doing better lately.”

Inside the park, his daughter held his hand and walked along the tree-lined path, her steps lighter than last month. She was wearing a white floral dress Lu Yuan had bought for thirty credits on a secondhand platform, washed clean and looking lovely on her. She stopped under a large banyan tree, looking up at the sparrows hopping between the branches, utterly absorbed.

“Daddy, what are they saying?”

“Maybe they’re saying the weather is nice today.”

“Do they know we’re watching them?”

“They probably do. Birds have sharp eyes.”

His daughter thought for a moment, then asked a question that made Lu Yuan’s heart sink: “Daddy, what about those stars—do they know we’re watching them?”

She meant the Starlink satellites. The park had no tall buildings blocking the sky. At dusk, you could occasionally see moving points of light gliding across the sky at a uniform speed—not airplanes, those had blinking lights. “They…” Lu Yuan paused, “of course they don’t know.”

Silas watched the moving dot travel slowly along the park’s forest paths, occasionally stopping—probably because the child had stopped to look at something. A cup of iced American coffee from the convenience store downstairs sat beside his hand, condensation beading on the cup, leaving a wet ring on the desk.

He did not order an arrest.

Arrest would be easy. Shenzhen was one of Starlink’s most heavily monitored cities. The Asia-Pacific Security Center could directly mobilize local cyber enforcement forces—the target would be surrounded within twenty minutes. But Silas didn’t want to spook the game. If it was the latter, he wanted to know if this person was worth recruiting.

No—what he wanted to know was whether this technique could become his leverage.

Silas took a sip of iced coffee and said to Liu Yang, who was sitting beside him, “Zoom in on his activity trajectory. All location data from the last seven days. Pull as much as you can.”

“Chief, that requires retrieving the complete connection logs of all his downstream devices. It’s a lot of data.”

“Then pull it. I’ll sign off on the authorization.”

Liu Yang said nothing and began typing. On the screen, data fragments from different time slices were assembled like puzzle pieces, gradually outlining Lu Yuan’s recent activity: his repair shop address, his rental location, the market he frequented, the pharmacy where he bought medicine, the hospital he’d taken his daughter to—

The hospital data made Silas pause.

He zoomed in on that coordinate and cross-referenced the date. The target had visited Shenzhen Municipal Children’s Hospital four days ago, neurology department, visit duration: two hours and seventeen minutes. He searched the hospital’s internal system for the terminal’s network activity records at that time—he couldn’t access the full medical data; Starlink’s user data privacy protocols limited his depth of query—but he saw an index: the account had attempted to request an OrbitNet AI advanced diagnostic, which had been rejected by the system due to insufficient quota.

Silas pieced these pieces together in his mind. Repair shop. Children’s hospital. Medical literature downloads. Rejected AI diagnostic request.

A profile gradually took shape. This didn’t look like a professional communications thief. This looked more like… a father with no way out.

Silas leaned back in his chair, stared at the ceiling, and was silent for a while. He didn’t know where the thought came from, but once it appeared, it wouldn’t leave. He was a security director. His job was to freeze this illegal connection, locate and arrest the intruder, and block all associated terminals. That was the standard procedure.

But his index finger hovered over the “Execute Block” button and didn’t press it.

He needed a more complete answer. Who this person was, how he’d done it—and most critically, whether this technical method could be replicated by others.

He didn’t intend to hand that answer to Milan. He intended to keep it for himself.

He closed the operations interface, stood up, and walked to the window. Outside, the Science Park was lighting up for the evening, the lights of countless office buildings merging into a sea of illumination. The cloner was hidden somewhere in that sea, like a fish that had dived into the deep ocean.

Silas looked out the window, his Adam’s apple moving slightly.

“I want him alive,” he murmured, as if saying it to the air, or to himself. “I want to know how he did it.”

Behind him, Liu Yang heard the words but didn’t respond. He kept staring at the positioning dot on his screen—the target was still in the park, walking by the lake with a small child, completely unaware that he was already locked in the sights of countless digital eyes.


In the park, dusk was falling.

Lu Yuan crouched down to retie his daughter’s loosened shoelace. The girl stood before him, her small hands on his shoulders, and suddenly said:

“Daddy, I want to be a doctor when I grow up.”

Lu Yuan looked up at her.

“Why?”

“Because doctors can help people get better,” she said very seriously, not at all like a five-year-old. “The lady doctor today smiled at me. Her smile was so pretty. I want to make other kids smile too.”

Lu Yuan’s hands stopped on the shoelace. He didn’t look up, afraid she would see his eyes.

The girl nodded firmly, then turned around and took her father’s hand, continuing to walk along the lakeside. The lake reflected the city’s skyline and the rising moonlight, ripples fine as countless fragments of hammered silver.

Lu Yuan held her hand and walked through the twilight. Overhead, the next Starlink satellite was already emerging on the eastern horizon, a cold point of light, at a uniform speed, without emotion, drawing closer.

He didn’t know that point of light was being read.

He didn’t know that the program codenamed “Net Strike” had already locked onto every step he took.

But at this moment, he didn’t care.

The only thing he cared about right now was the warmth coming from his daughter’s palm—small, warm, seeping into his bloodstream along the lines of his hand, grain by grain, like some precious, slowly infused strength.

The stars above were watching him. But his hand was holding his daughter’s.
