Milan stared at the blue icon. He didn’t immediately do anything. He just looked at it, confirming it was real, confirming it had indeed become the color he had preset for the activated state. “It’s done.” Farhan’s voice sounded unreal in the open wilderness, as if he was saying something he himself could barely believe had been accomplished.
But Lu Yuan didn’t answer. He was looking at his phone — his terminal had just received a message, not through SkyWalker, through a more primitive path. His phone vibrated twice, the screen lit up.
The first message was from Dr. Zhao, through an emergency backup SMS number, the hospital’s line for urgent medical notifications. The message was just a few words — Dr. Zhao had probably sent it hastily in an unencrypted environment:
「Account restriction lifted. Remote consultation window is open. Confirm ASAP.」
The second message was from a source address that displayed no number. It had been sent about seventeen seconds before Dr. Zhao’s — almost immediately after the nested entry point was activated. It was also brief, so short it didn’t need a second reading:
「Your line is open. Mine is too. — M」
Lu Yuan read both messages. He put the phone back in his pocket, his fingertip pausing on the casing for a moment — not hesitation, a physical confirmation that what he was doing was actually happening.
“It’s done.” He repeated Farhan’s words. But the repetition no longer sounded like confirming a technical result — it was more like saying something he himself had been waiting for for a very long time, so long that when it finally happened, he found he had no pre-prepared language to express it.
Above them, the stars continued their orbits. The stars that charged, the stars that didn’t charge, the light from real stars that had traveled millions of years, the sunlight reflected by Starlink satellites — they mixed together, weaving an indistinguishable sea of light across the deep blue night sky.
In that sea of light, a tiny — practically negligible — logical space was quietly existing.
It was small. Only 1 KB.
It was empty. But it was free.
Lu Yuan lowered his head and walked toward the silver-gray Wuling Hongguang. Farhan had already loaded the aluminum case back into the trunk and was using a padlock to re-lock the pried-open equipment cabinet — not to really prevent anyone from discovering it, just to make it look untouched.
The engine started. Farhan didn’t turn on the headlights, slowly driving away from the ground station in idle, only turning on the lights after reaching the main road, merging into the sparse early-morning traffic.
Behind the car, the abandoned ground station was swallowed again by darkness and wild grass. The parabolic antenna pointed silently at the sky, like a silent watcher that had completed a mission it itself didn’t know about, in a corner no one was looking at.
In the night sky, the old-model Starlink satellite STK-17254 was moving southeast, its debug buffer holding an extra string of data, its QKD noise signature sampler carrying a change in a flag bit.
It was just a satellite about to be decommissioned. But tonight, as a data packet passed through its circuits at a rate of one bit per second, it had received the first signal in human history that was not in any billing system.
Small. Light.
But it no longer needed anyone’s permission.
